Biography
Hanako Mohri
Born in Tokyo in 1997. Lives and works in Tokyo.
She graduated from the Department of Imaging Arts and Sciences at Musashino Art University in 2024 and completed a master’s programme in moving image and photography at the same university in 2026. In 2025, she studied at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, China, as an exchange student.
Her installations, moving image works, and paintings explore the relationship between danchi (standardised housing complexes in Japan) and the bathroom, a private space at their innermost core. By dismantling and reconstructing the nested spatial structures that extend from a building’s exterior walls to an individual’s skin, she explores where self-identity resides in the contemporary city.
She has been selected for the 28th and 29th editions of the Taro Okamoto Award for Contemporary Art and received the Spiral Encouragement Award at SICF Fukuoka. Her work has also been screened at SiamANIMA in Thailand and exhibited at the 2025 World University Students’ Contemporary Art Exhibition in Xinjiang, China. She continues to present her work in Japan and internationally.
